Kakariki Olives
The Kakariki Olive Grove was established in 2000 and purchased by Ray and Brenda Gregory in March 2018. When Brenda and Ray took over they didn't know about growing olives but they did have a background in the rural sector and knew how to work hard. It was a steep learning curve but they received good support from the previous owners and in a short space of time made the property their own.
The olive grove is planted with about 3500 olive trees that are largely Tuscan varieties and they produce a medium to robust style of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Pressed on site within hours of harvesting, the Tuscan varitals Frantoio and Leccino have been carefully blended to produce this premium extra virgin olive oil.
Kakarik Olives have already notched up a number of gold, silver and bronze medals for its oil over the years. The highlight for Brenda and Ray was receiving a gold medal for their Mediterranean blend at the New York International Olive Competition in 2020.
Brenda really likes the people and the environment of the Nelson Farmers Market. She enjoys being around epople who have all worked hard to grow/produce their products. This gives them a shared understanding and philosophy. She also enjoys having time to get to know her customersand has discovered the more they know about you the more they appreciate the product. Brenda is really proud that such amazing oil can be produced from a tiny little fruit. 'We produce as good an oil here in Nelson, as anywhere else in the world".
